Special: We've reached the halfway point with our look back at our favorite games of 2007.
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3
Platform: PlayStation 2
Publisher: Atlus
Developer: Atlus
Release Date: August 14, 2007
"Persona 3 is one of those Сhidden gems' that will be talked about for years to come. With it's well-written story and excellent soundtrack It's highly deserving of its place among the top RPGs to date in a list which includes classics like Xenogears, Chrono Trigger, and Final Fantasy VII. If it isn't the Сtrue' definitive RPG of the PS2 generation, it's certainly one of the top." - Jason Young

Sin & Punishment
Platform: Virtual Console
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Treasure
Release Date: October 1, 2007
"Sin & Punishment is only seven years old, but it already has a long and sorted history. Originally released only in Japan on the Nintendo 64 during that system's final days in 2000, Sin & Punishment quickly gained a reputation as one of gaming's underappreciated gems. Fans of Treasure's previous (and subsequent) shooters will be very happy with Sin & Punishment. Basically, if you are a shooter fan, you should consider the 1200 Wii Points needed for Sin & Punishment as good as spent." - John Scalzo

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
Platform: PC
Publisher: THQ
Developer: GSC Game World
Release Date: March 20, 2007
"S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is definitely a game worth playing for shooter fans, or even for someone more interested in RPGs but looking for a change of pace. The things it does well (environment, story, character) definitely outweigh the shortcomings (tough ranged combat, uneven framerates). The multiplayer has the makings of a classic, and GSC is evidently working at improving it, since their first patch was mostly multiplayer fixes. It's a game that pushes the boundaries of the FPS, and even though it doesn't always succeed 100%, it would make a great addition to the collection of any serious gamer." - Jason Cisarano

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
Platform: Virtual Console
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Nintendo
Release Date: October 1, 2007
"While it's not the first time Super Mario Bros. 2 has been brought to an American audience, it is the first time we've been able to experience the game with all of the original graphics and the super hard difficulty intact. Howard Lincoln may have been right to an extent, but any Mario fan will be thrilled to finally get their hands on this game and at 600 Wii Points, it's a steal (even if that is a slight premium over standard NES games). After 21 years, American gamers will finally get a chance to play the original Super Mario Bros. 2 through the wonder of the Wii Virtual Console." - John Scalzo

Super Paper Mario
Platform: Wii
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Intelligent Systems
Release Date: April 9, 2007
"This is arguably the best game I have yet to play on the Wii. With Super Paper Mario, Intelligent Systems has crafted a game that will appeal to fans of both the platforming and RPG genres. The game is not perfect. Gameplay can be a little slow sometimes with the dialogue heavy portions. It can also be hard at times it may be hard to figure out where to go (the game provides a medium character complete with a crystal ball for this purpose). However, these are small distractions from yet another stellar entry in the Paper Mario series. Keep up the good work Intelligent." - David Taylor

Super Stardust HD
Platform: PlayStation Network
Publisher: SCEA
Developer: Housemarque
Release Date: June 15, 2007
The comparisons to Bizarre's Geometry Wars were inevitable, but Super Stardust HD does enough different to carve out it's own niche in the "downloadable games with flashy explosions" genre. The game is in a class by itself on the PlayStation Network. - John Scalzo
