News: Game Designer Chris Sawyer has settled his lawsuit against Atari.
Chris Sawyer, the original designer behind Atari's 1999 sleeper hit RollerCoaster Tycoon, has seen the end of his 2005 lawsuit against the publisher. The suit focused on Atari failing to pay Sawyer all of his expected royalties. According to the original court documents Sawyer was shorted $4.8 million in royalties from his RollerCoaster Tycoon titles and Transport Tycoon.
Since its release in 1999 RollerCoaster Tycoon has spawned two sequels and multiple expansion packs pulling in a reported $180 million for Atari. Sawyer's suit claimed that he was entitled to $30 million of the $180 million but due to 13 missed payments, the sum came out much lower.
Terms of the settlement are confidential and have not nor will they be released publicly but it appears that Atari's new CEO, David Gardner, has already begun to clean-up the publisher's image. A step in the right direction for one of gaming's oldest names, even if it isn't the same company.
