News: Developer now carries license until 2014 with an option to extend till 2017.

The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar should not be going anywhere soon since developer Turbine has just received and extension to their licensing deal with Tolkien Enterprises. The deal will now enable the Massachusetts-based developer to continue developing MMORPGs based on The Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings trilogy until 2014. The extension also has an option allowing Turbine to push the agreement till 2017 should they chose.

УWe're thrilled with the global success of The Lord of the Rings Online since its launch in 2007,Ф said Jim Crowley, president and CEO of Turbine, Inc. УWith the recent announcement of what are sure to be two blockbuster films based on The Hobbit and a sequel, we expect the success of the license and our relationship with Tolkien Enterprises to grow for years to come.Ф

With two new The Hobbit based movies coming out you can almost guarantee that the date will be extended since the franchise's popularity should remain high. Perhaps we will see some sort of The Hobbit expansion.
