Special: What we loved from 2008.

Gamers have quite a bit to look forward to in 2009 with a ton of highly anticipated releases for every platform and every type of player. But we'll get to that soon. Right now, it's time to look back at all of the titles that made 2008 a great year. Especially since all of the big games of 2009 are still a few weeks away, at least.

So here are the 40 games from 2008 that the staff of Gaming Target chose as title we'll still be playing in 2009 and beyond.

Part 1 Х Part 2 Х Part 3 Х Part 4

Star Wars: The Force Unleashed
Platforms: PS3, Xbox 360
Publisher: LucasArts
Developer: LucasArts
Release Date: September 16, 2008

"For Star Wars fans, The Force Unleashed is required playing to continue your membership in the Star Wars geekdom. The plot additions to the Star Wars saga alone should be more than enough to convince even lapsed fans. But it is also a solid action title that requires strategic combat and allows players to dispatch enemies in a way never before seen in a Star Wars game. Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is truly a force to be reckoned with. Don't let anyone convince you otherwise until you give it a shot yourself." - John Scalzo

Strong Bad's Cool Game For Attractive People
Platforms: PC, Wii
Publisher: Telltale Games
Developer: Telltale Games
Release Date: August 2008 (Episode 1)

"Ultimately the player's enjoyment of SBCG4FAP will be largely determined by whether he or she is a fan of both the Flash cartoon and point-and-click adventure games. That being said, I found that the game's humor and entertaining quest made it well worth the $10 investment ($8.95 for the PC). Like many adventure games, the replay value is not tremendously high, but the promise of future episodes helps to resolve this issue." - David Taylor

Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Platform: Wii
Publisher: Nintendo
Developer: Game Arts
Release Date: March 9, 2008

"While Super Smash Bros. Brawl does not offer very much in the way of innovation, it is one of those games that is so polished and so full of value that it is bound to sell well for quite some time." - Patrick Mulhern

Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix
Platforms: PSN, XBLA
Publisher: Capcom
Developer: Backbone Entertainment
Release Date:

"Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix is going to hold us over until Street Fighter IV releases next year and it'll be an XBLA game we go a few rounds with for months after that. If you have an HDTV and if you love Street Fighter and if you still have $15 to your name in this economy, you owe it to yourself to download SFII Turbo HD Remix, even if it means skipping a meal." - Matt Swider

Valkyria Chronicles
Platform: PS3
Publisher: Sega
Developer: Sega
Release Date: November 4, 2008

"This is the game that Operation Darkness for the Xbox 360 should have been. With its combination of an enthralling story, interesting blend of gameplay, beautiful graphics, and a gripping soundtrack Valkyria Chronicles is right up there with Final Fantasy Tactics as one of the best SRPGs to ever be released. Although it can be hard to stomach the slow pace of the game in between battle at times, the game is still a must play where almost anyone can find something that they'll like and is a great addition to the PS3 library. PS3 owners be glad, you just received this generation's best Japanese role playing game to date." - Jason Young
