Rise of the Triad

News: I'm gonna party like it's 1995 with the greatest FPS ever!

Game download portal Good Old Games has announced the addition of the PC classic Rise of the Triad: Dark War to their service. Never heard of Rise of the Triad? That's not surprising. It's a mid-90s first person shooter... similar to the Dooms, Wolfensteins and Duke Nukems of the day... but it's also completely insane and in a class all by itself.

The story is your standard "lone soldier out to stop a megalomaniacal maniac" trope that defined FPSs in the mid-90s:

You are part of an elite group of operatives called HUNT (High-risk United Nations Taskforce), and you must stop a maniac cult leader from killing millions of people. While scouting a remote island, you are suddenly surrounded by enemy troops with guns blaring. In the distance you see your boat - your only chance to escape - blown to matchsticks. In front of you is a huge fortress monastery, and your only chance to stop the madness.

But ROTT shines in the weirdness department including a variety of weapons such as "drunk missiles" (heat seeking missiles that are, well, drunk), "the Flamewall" (literally a gun that produces a wall of flame) and the hand of God. That's not to mention the craziness of Shrooms Mode and Dog Mode. Oh, and when killed, enemy soldiers explode in a shower of "gibs" (a bloody display of body parts, including flying eyeballs).

Rise of the Triad: Dark War is available on GOG.com for $5.99 and I guarantee, if you're a fan of old school shooters, it's the best $5.99 you will ever spend. The ROTT package also includes the game's manual, soundtrack and a bonus level pack.
