News: Is Konami leaving secret messages in their games?

During the 2005 Tokyo Game Show, Sony released a list detailing over 100 PlayStation 3 titles that were said to be in development. Among the games on that list was Gradius VI.

In the intervening years, nothing else was revealed about the title before a Famitsu report listed it as "canceled" back in 2007. After some public outcry, Konami quickly issued a statement saying it wasn't canceled, but in the more than two years since, that game has never been mentioned publicly.

That is, until now. Maybe.

The opening cinematic from the WiiWare retro remix Gradius ReBirth starts with a news report that is interrupted by the start of the game. The first news headline is displayed as...

"Gradius developing next-gen fighter"

Could this be Konami subtly reannouncing Gradius VI? Or is M2, the development team behind Gradius ReBirth, just having some fun?

We've contacted Konami for their opinion on this screenshot, but personally, I think the words "next-gen fighter" are too on the nose to be a coincidence.

We'll have more soon.
