News: Sony's sequel to the quirky rhythm game may not get a UMD release.
Sony has told Ars Technica that Patapon 2, the upcoming sequel to the quirky PSP rhythm game Patapon, may be released as a download-only title through the PlayStation Store.
According to the article, Patapon 2 will be released on the PlayStation Store on May 5 (which, interestingly enough, is not a Thursday). That same day, "boxed" copies of the game will be shipped to retailers containing a download code for the game. However, the statement Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications at SCEA, did not rule out a UMD release for the game:
"We're considering a digital only format for the Patapon 2 release as a one time test case as we continue to explore consumer preferences for digital content. The downloadable game will be available on May 5th at both retail and via the PlayStation Store. We remain focused on providing superior games and entertainment experiences in both the UMD and digital formats and are working closely with our partners to deliver the best PSP line up in our history."
So while Sony is moving ahead with their advanced digital distribution plans for the PSP, the system may not be abandoning the UMD format completely just yet.
Personally, I'm looking forward to how Sony will handle the complaints of confused gamers who didn't realize their Patapon 2 box only contained a download code for the game.
