News: Yes, that headline is for real.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, TT Games, The Lego Group, Harmonix and MTV Games are forming a supergroup of developers and publishers to bring Lego Rock Band to the PlayStation 3, Wii and Xbox 360 this holiday season. A DS version is also in the works and it will be developed by Backbone Entertainment (who are also working on Rock Band Unplugged for the PSP).

Rumors of Lego Rock Band surfaced a few weeks ago and while most of us dismissed it as a hoax, the game is most definitely real. Designed to bring the Rock Band experience to "families, tweens and teens" in a "unique family-friendly" way. Translation, Harmonix (and Lego Star Wars developer Travellers Tales) plans to pack this version of Rock Band with fewer tunes that would trigger a Teen rating from the ESRB. Tunes such as:

  • Blur - "Song 2"
  • Carl Douglas - "Kung Fu Fighting"
  • Europe - "The Final Countdown"
  • Good Charlotte - "Boys and Girls"
  • Pink - "So What"

"Song 2" and "Kung Fu Fighting"? Family friendly or not, that is awesome. However, there's no word yet on when, or if, Harmonix plans to add these songs to the Rock Band Store. Speaking of the Rock Band Store, there's also no word on whether or not Lego Rock Band will allow users to access the store to purchase downloadable tracks.

What we do know about Lego Rock Band is that it will supply the same style of play as a regular Rock Band game, except everything will be Lego-ized. All of the characters will be built with Lego minifigure parts and all of the venues will "mimic the imaginative settings that the Lego world offers." The player's band, roadies, managers and crew will all be customizable as well.

Finally, Lego Rock Band will support all Rock Band instruments as well as other music game controllers.

    We'll have more soon.
