News: Voting is now open for Spike TV's annual Video Game Awards.

Geoff Keighley of GameTrailers TV has announced that voting for the 2009 Spike TV Video Game Awards is now open at VGA.Spike.com.

This year's nominees for Game of the Year include Assassin's Creed II (PS3, Xbox 360), Batman: Arkham Asylum (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360), Left 4 Dead 2 (PC, Xbox 360) and Uncharted 2: Among Thieves (PS3).

Sadly, New Super Mario Bros. Wii was shut out of a nomination because Spike TV is reserving most of the Game of the Year slots for multiplatform games. But it is up for Best Wii Game alongside MadWorld, Punch-Out!! and Wii Sports Resort.

Other nominees for the platform-specific awards include...

  • Batman: Arkham Asylum, Forza Motorsport 3, Halo 3: ODST and Left 4 Dead 2 for Best Xbox 360 Game.

  • Infamous, Killzone 2, Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack in Time and Uncharted 2 for Best PS3 Game

  • Dragon Age: Origins, Left 4 Dead 2, Plants vs Zombies and The Sims 3 for Best PC Game.

  • Gand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box and Scribblenauts for Best Handheld Game.

Other award categories include Studio of the Year, Best Independent Game, Best Shooter, Best Fighting Game, Best Action/Adventure Game, Best RPG, Best Multiplayer Game, Best Individual Sports Game, Best Team Sports Game, Best Driving Game, Best Music Game, Best Soundtrack, Best Original Score, Best Graphics, Best Game Based on a Movie or TV Show, Best Performance by a Human Female, Best Performance by a Human Male, Best Cast, Best Voice, Best Downloadable Game, Best DLC and Most Anticipated Game. The full list of nominees can be found at VGA.Spike.com.

And speaking of anticipated games, Keighley also revealed the first game that will make its world premiere during the Video Game Awards, Halo: Reach. Strangely, the sequel to Microsoft's biggest franchise did not earn a Most Anticipated Game nom, but its first real trailer will take center stage at the show. A variety of other 2010 and 2011 releases will make their debut during the ceremony and, according to Keighley, most of them will be new, never-before-seen games.

The 2009 Spike TV Video Game Awards will be aired live on Saturday December 12th at 8 PM Eastern Time on Spike TV.
