While the plot of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen may have made me cry more than witnessing Optimus Prime's animated death over twenty years ago, Activision is not giving up on giving gamers a new game adaptation of the franchise.
Titled Transformers: War For Cybertron, the game will be developed by High Moon Studios and it will be coming to the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 sometime in 2010. Instead of being based on the cartoon or the film series, War For Cybertron will be set in the time before the Ark crashlanded on Earth, during a Cybertronian Civil War previously seen in the comic book series Transformers: War Within.
Game Informer has declared December Transformers month as the magazine plans to post new details about the game all throughout the month at their Transformers Hub. Currently, the hub only has a history of the Transformers, but eight more articles will be posted before the end of the year, including on today. War For Cybertron will also be featured in a six-page spread in the magazine's January issue (the one with Dead Space 2 on the cover).
Like previous Transformers games, War For Cybertron will feature separate Autobot and Decepticon campaigns. It will also include squad-based gameplay and a Gears of War-like over-the-shoulder camera view.
Finally, Activision has released the first trailer for the game, as well as opening up the game's official site at TransformersGame.com. A countdown clock (in an indecipherable Cybertronian script) is all that's available at the website for now, but the trailer (which can be found below) is pretty great:
