News: That's less than three months away.

Nintendo is holding a press event in San Francisco today to showcase their first half of the year lineup and they've already dropped two huge bombshells.

The biggest news of all is that Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be released for the Wii on May 23. No, that's not a typo and yes, that's less than three months from now. The sequel to 2007's Super Mario Galaxy will give Mario a new tool, the Spin-Dig Drill and his dinosaur companion, Yoshi, will return. The Spin-Dig Drill will allow Mario to drill through a planet and appear on the other side. In addition to a new power (tool), Yoshi regains an old one as eating specific fruits or enemies in Galaxy 2 will give him special abilities as they did in Super Mario World. For example, eating a Blimp Fruit turns Yoshi into a blimp.

In the nearer term, Nintendo has also revealed that the DSi XL, the extra-large DSi that launched in Japan last year, will be released in America on March 28. It will retail for $189.99. It's giant-size screen will be put to good use this Summer when Nintendo launches 100 Classic Books (which will include Journey to the Center of the Earth and Dracula, among others) on June 14 for a budget price of $20.

We'll be posting more news from Nintendo's Spring Media Summit all day today. And thanks to Wired for the great liveblog.
