Dark Energy Digital originally announced Hydrophobia, a survival horror game using their new water-based physics engine, a few years ago. In the intervening months, the game was chopped up into three episodes, became an Xbox Live Arcade exclusive and was pushed back more than a year from its original March 2009 release date. A flood of new information should be unleashed any time now as Dark Energy has launched the game's official website at Hydrophobia-Game.com.
Right now, the site just contains a countdown clock that is set to expire on the first day of next week's PAX East show, which is when Dark Energy has promised to announce more details about the game.
However, the site also contains a secret link to the site neomalthusians.com, which offers a hidden math problem, f(t) = a X 1.01t + b X 1.02t, where a > 0 and b > 0, and a lone answer box. Thanks to the great posters at Evil Avatar, the answer to the math problem was deduced as g(t) = b X 1.02, which leads to a popup box pointing towards a YouTube user named KnowMalthus:
The resulting video is a call from the Neo Malthusians, a terrorist group in Hydrophobia, to kill yourself as they believe that people are starving due to the world being overpopulated.
So there you have it. Crazy viral videos, new water effects, eco-terrorists, Hydrophobia's got it all. Except for a gameplay trailer, which we'll hopefully get next week at PAX.
