News: And it'll debut at this year's E3.
Nintendo of Japan has issued a short press release announcing that the "3DS" is now in development. 3DS is the company's codename for their next handheld system and the successor to the DS/DSi platform.
Few details about the 3DS were revealed, but the biggest new feature in Nintendo's next handheld will be its support of 3D effects without the need for 3D glasses.
The system will also be backwards compatible with DS and DSi games, so at the very least we can also assume it will have two screens (one a touchscreen) and the two cameras present in the DSi.
Nintendo will showcase the 3DS at this year's E3 expo and plan to release the handheld in Japan at some point during their next fiscal year (which runs from April 1, 2010 through March 31, 2011). But with an E3 debut, a late Fall launch is probably the earliest we'll get it.
We'll have more soon.
