News: Brazil has game developers? Who knew?

Quick, name a game that's been developed in Brazil. Give up? I couldn't come up with anything either, but the team behind the PC game The Light of the Darkness hopes to change that.

A side-scrolling action RPG in the vein of Castlevania and Actraiser, the game is in development at Legion.Mesh with help from the Brazilian Ministry of Culture.

The team at Legion.Mesh is attempting to build an entire world and mythology behind The Light of the Darkness. The translation from Portuguese to English makes the story a tad hard to understand, but it seems that the game concerns two parallel dimensions, the World of the Light and the World of Darkness, which have been warring for years. The angel-like Sephius has taken up his sword and his shield to partake in this battle, as explained on the game's official website, TheLightoftheDarkness.com.

While the game's world may be complex, early screenshots and the game's trailer reveal a side-scrolling environment that should be intimately familar to gamers.

We'll hopefully have more on The Light of the Darkness soon. It is shaping up to be an excellent "sword and shield" side-scroller, a setting the genre has visited in a long time.
