News: Right now, it's just a theory.

UPDATE: Activision has assured us that all versions of the game will be the same. "All platforms are the same. The platforms are just submitted to the ESRB at different times," an Activision PR rep said.

Buried deep at the bottom of the press release announcing Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock is a notice that the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions have been rated T For Teen by the ESRB while the Wii version remained unrated. This innocuous sentence could be nothing, or it could be a predictor of the Wii version falling victim to a little self-censorship.

It's no secret that the Wii is considered the most "family-friendly" console. And the all-ages party atmosphere of the Guitar Hero games is a big reason for that. Perhaps Activision feels this "family-friendly" focus will not jibe well with Warriors of Rock's satanic imagery:

[P]layers will embark on a larger-than-life, epic rock journey from the stage of CBGBs, the infamous punk-rock club in New York City, to the molten lava fields of rock treachery as eight Guitar Hero characters transform into rock warriors that must join together to use their unique, game-changing powers to help the Demi-God of Rock take down "The Beast" and save rock n' roll.

Another possibility is that the song list of the Wii version will differ significantly from the PS3/Xbox 360 version or use "radio edit" editions of the songs, but Activision made no mention of this in their press release.

We have contacted Activision to get to the bottom of this ratings anomaly and we'll (hopefully) have more soon.
