News: And an iPhone version too.

Id Software's QuakeCon is always good for a surprise or two, and this year's show was no different.

During John Carmack's keynote address, the legendary developer revealed a very technologically impressive iPhone version of Rage, the company's upcoming Mad Max-esque shooter/driving game.

Later in the day, id designer Tim Willits revealed exactly when we'll get our hands on the game. It is currently set to be released on the PC, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and the iPhone on September 13, 2011. For a "when it's done" company like id, announcing a release date for a game more than a year away is a big deal.

"We're going to have the biggest, coolest, most badass launch possible," Willits said.

Sadly, the Rage announcement was the only big surprise to come out of QuakeCon 2010. Doom 4 is still shrouded in mystery, and with Rage's far-off release date, will likely remain that way for a long time.
