News: No word on an American release.

The Super Mario series turned 25 years old this year and Nintendo plans to celebrate in Japan by re-releasing Super Mario All-Stars on the Wii.

Originally released for the Super NES in 1993, All-Stars is a compilation featuring enhanced remakes of Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels. The game was known as Super Mario Collection in Japan and a second version was created that bundled in Super Mario World on a single cartridge.

What makes the Wii re-release so special, according to Andriasang, is that the former SNES game won't be coming to the Virtual Console. Instead, it'll be released as a disc-based game known as Super Mario Collection Special Pack.

Besides confirming its existence (and an October 21 release date), Nintendo of Japan hasn't revealed any details about the game. So its unknown if it'll be the original version, the Mario World version or something else entirely.

Japanese retailers are reporting it'll include a special "History of Mario" book and a soundtrack CD.

It's all not known if Nintendo has any plans on releasing the compilation in America. However, all four of Mario's NES adventures (even the previously Japan-only Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels) can be downloaded from the Virtual Console for $21.

We'll have more soon.
