News: The PSP's a hit... sort of.
While not the blockbuster that Sony was hoping for, the PSP still managed to move 600,000 units in it's first week on store shelves. 500,000 of those sales came in the first two days after the wednesday at midnight launch.
"The launch of PSP was everything we hoped for, with extraordinary consumer demand driving sales of hardware units alone upwards of $150 million in first week sales, far and away above those generated by any other product in the space," said Kaz Hirai, president and chief executive officer, Sony Computer Entertainment America. "In only two weeks, PSP is having an immediate impact across the entire industry as consumers are clearly voting it the product of the year in 2005."
More than a million PSPs are in the hands of consumers in Japan since it's launch there and Sony expects similar numbers for the US soon.
But you know they have to be slightly disappointed after this quote: "Making the $150 million mark all the more spectacular, PSP sales were achieved during a traditionally slower non-holiday season launch, and during a period when many retailers were closed for Easter."
I'm not sure who wrote that, but very few retailers are closed on Easter. They may have shortened hours, but Easter is still a big day shopping wise.
But blockbuster or not, we at Gaming Target will be keeping a close eye on everything PSP from now on.
