News: Sony talks about the PS3 at the Game Developers Conference and reveals something a little 'Clank'y.

Phil Harrison stood up at the Game Developers Conference today and gave his keynote speech "PlayStation 3: Beyond the Box". In that speech Harrison reiterated many of the points raised at the PS3 Conference in Japan a few days ago, but he did manage to reveal a few new tidbits of information.

Harrison, along with other Sony employees, showed demos of a few PS3 games including I-8 (now known as Resistance: Fall of Man), MotorStorm, Warhawk and an unannounced car combat game. The crowning demo was footage taken from the Ratchet and Clank universe. Of course, that game remains officially unannounced as well.

Harrison capped the speech by talking about the PlayStation Network Platform AKA PS3 Live. The system will be free of charge and provide game lobbies, matchmaking services, scoreboards, video, voice chat, avatars and downloadable content. Third parties (and Sony themselves) will be able to add advanced functions that will, naturally, come with a fee.

But it's the downloadable content that's the interesting part. Going to PlayStation.com/beyond brings you to Sony's E-Distribution Initiative (EDI). EDI is Sony's indie development platform where they plan to solicit pitches from the gaming community to create downloadable games for the PS3 network. Right now you can go to the site and supply your contact information. Sony will review this information and some day soon might contact you about a game pitch.

Wow.

More information and thoughts on the Sony keynote can be found at Kotaku and Joystiq.
