News: EGM is at it again, pseudo-announcing another big PS3 game.

The June 2006 issue of EGM was supposed to reveal all about the Wii. Well, the magazine hit newsstands over the weekend and the Revoliution report (the word Wii is never used in the article) included nothing that wasn't also unveiled at E3. Even the much vaunted "confirmed launch price" of $249 was just a financial analyst donating his two cents to the issue.

However, a much more interesting bit of news appeared in the article titled Xbox 360 Versus PlayStation 3. According to EGM, a Final Fantasy VII remake for the PS3 is officially in the works and will be released sometime in 2007.

It's worth noting that the rest of the article includes games we already know exist, but with wild release date predictions that sometimes have no basis in reality (Gran Turismo 5 at launch? Yeah right).

So could EGM be mistaken? It's possible, but if you'll recall, the last time they were accused of prematurely "confirming" a game's existence was with Virtua Fighter 5 for the PS3. EGM announced it, Sega denied it and forum freaks the world over wagged their fingers in EGM's direction over their supposed shoddy journalism practices. There were even accusations that Shoe and crew had made the whole thing up.

But then Sega went and announced Virtua Fighter 5 as a PS3 exclusive in their run-up to E3. Exactly as previously reported in EGM.

So while I think the idea of a Final Fantasy VII remake is still unlikely (you'd think a game with a 2007 release date would merit at least a mention at E3 2006), it may be closer to reality than we think.

We'll keep you posted.
