PS3 ships a million in America @ Gaming Target

News: Another day, another report of next-gen sales numbers.

Sony has announced that they have shipped one million PlayStation 3s to North American retailers. They hit this milestone before the end of 2006 and, according to SCEA CEO Jack Tretton, the PS3 reached a million faster than the PS2 did.

УSCEA went to great lengths to help meet demand for PS3, including airlifting systems into North America on a weekly basis to ensure a steady stream of units were available to consumers throughout the holiday season,Ф said Jack Tretton, president and CEO, SCEA. УThe fact that we were able to reach the one-million mark faster than our top-selling platform, PS2, further validates the strength of the PlayStation brand and our belief that consumers are ready to experience true high-definition gaming.Ф

УReaching the one million mark for PS3 is the first of many major milestones for us as we head into a new year. Even more impressive, is that we were able to accomplish this feat while successfully managing two other platformsЧPS2 and PSP,Ф said Tretton. УWith three PlayStation platforms now available to users, 2007 will be about software and delivering innovative, new experiences and award-winning franchises to consumers, both through retail and through our online PlayStation Network.Ф

It should be noted that these are shipped, not sold, numbers. But even with the reports of PS3s "rotting" on store shelves, the number of consoles sold must be very close to one million.
