News: And the PS3 port of the original game is canceled...
In a short press release, THQ has quickly announced that Volition is hard at work on Saints Row 2 for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. They are not quite ready to reveal anything about the game just yet, but the company assured us it would be coming out in 2008.
"The original Saints Row earned critical acclaim for its stunning graphics, unparalleled customization options and the genre's first-ever online multiplayer," said Kelly Flock, executive vice president of worldwide publishing, THQ. "The game's worldwide success shows the growing fanaticism for open-world gaming and our talented team at Volition is now using their proprietary technology to revolutionize the genre yet again."
Meanwhile, company CEO Brian Farrell has let gamers know, in the company's quarterly conference call, that the PS3 port of the first Saints Row has been canceled, "We think the most important thing for the Saints Row franchise is to have a simultaneous ship into a larger installed base next year. We think the bigger opportunity is a multiplatform launch." That now leaves the original game exclusive to the Xbox 360 once more.
We'll have more on all things Saints Row soon.
