News: Behold the power of Blu-Ray with the new SOCOM for the PS3... wait a minute.
At their 2007 Gamer's Day, Sony has announced SOCOM is coming to the PS3, but not like you'd think. SOCOM Confrontation will be available exclusively as a download through the PlayStation Network this November, but it will still provide the same SOCOM thrills we've come to expect.
SOCOM Confrontation will ship with five North African-based maps, including fan favorite "Crossroads," with more available in "themed packs." The game will focus on online play with tournaments, clan ladders and leaderboards. In an interesting twist, the game is not being developed by SOCOM's regular team at Zipper Interactive. Instead, newcomers Slant Six will be creating Confrontation, with an assist from Zipper.
With this announcement, Sony has proven they are focused on building an online presence for the PlayStation 3. But SOCOM's dependance on microtransactions and downloadable content may hurt it's adoption rate among PS3 owners. It also raises questions about Sony's position that Blu-Ray makes games better if one of their biggest series' can be distilled down to a downloadable game.
But whatever happens, we'll have more on SOCOM Confrontation soon.
