News: Will your favorite games work in your shiny new PS3? Find out inside.
Sony has shipped the last of the Emotion Engine-equipped 60 GB PlayStation 3 systems to retailers. From here on out, if you want a PS3 it's going to come with an emulated "software solution" to PS2 and PSone backwards compatibility. But how will you know which classic games will work in your shiny new PS3?
If you lived in Europe, Sony Europe had set up an online database that included descriptions of any major gameplay problems with PS2/PSone emulation on a PS3. Today, a similar site opened for American PS3 owners and it can be accessed at the following URL:
www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus
Gamers will have to select whether they own a 60 GB or 80 GB PS3 and then search the database for their game of choice. Most games feature the reassuring description:
No major problems for this title. Others will go into gory detail about all the problems gamers have faced, including problems with different firmware versions and any notable bug fixes.
Sony hopes to have 100% backwards compatibility someday and we'll keep you posted on their progress.
