News: What I like about you... is that you file frivolous lawsuits...
80s rockers The Romantics have decided that the cover version of their biggest hit "What I Like About You" included in Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the 80s might be too close to the original. In fact, they have decided to sue Activision, the publisher of the Guitar Hero series, because the cover version "infringes on the group's right to its own likeness."
The group is seeking to have the game pulled from store shelves along with other unspecified damages. They have also filed suit against Wavegroup Sound, the company responsible for the cover version.
The Romantics will have an uphill battle in proving their case as they originally provided Activision with permission to cover the song in Guitar Hero Encore. The in-game text for the song also includes the "As Made Famous By" tag which indicates a cover song.
"What I Like About You" has been covered many times in recent years by a variety of bands including Poison, Lillix and Everlife. A version was also "performed" by Barbie (the doll) for a CD called "Barbie Hit Mix."
