Nintendo has released a financial report covering the first half of their fiscal year (April 2008 - September 2008) that details exactly how the Wii and DS rule the video game world.
According to Nintendo, the Nintendo DS has shipped 84.33 million systems worldwide, which is more than the Game Boy Advance (which sold
only 81.36 million units). They also said that 454.63 million copies of DS games have been sold worldwide. This means the average DS owner owns about five games.
On the Wii side of the fence, Nintendo announced they have shipped 34.55 million Wii consoles worldwide while 229.85 million copies of Wii games have been shipped to stores. A little quick math says that the average Wii owner owns between six and seven games (not counting
Wii Sports).
For comparison's sake, VGChartz.com pegs the PlayStation 3 at just over 16 million consoles worldwide and the Xbox 360 at almost 22 million. The PSP, while no slouch at almost 40 million systems, appears to have been lapped.
