News: All the dirt, straight from the developers.
Yesterday, the developers of The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition held court on Facebook to answer questions from fans about the remake of the LucasArts classic.
Aside from the multiple questions about Guybrush Threepwood's new hairstyle (the developers like it, deal with it!), there were a few interesting tidbits of information revealed. Such as...
The PC version will be released as a download only. There will not be a packaged CD or DVD version.
The new voiceover track will not be available if the game is set to the classic graphics setting.
The game's "main path" will only be worth 100 Gamerscore Points. So you'll have to play through at least twice to unlock all of the Achievements.
Development on the remake began about eight months ago.
The PC and XBLA versions will be released simultaneously.
While there are currently no plans to release the remake on any platforms besides the PC and XBLA, if sales are good enough, a Mac, PS3 or Wii release could be a possibility.
While there are currently no plans to remake any of the other games in the series, if sales are good enough, the team would love to tackle Monkey Island 2 next.
When pressed about the possibility of classic LucasArts adventure games on the DS, the response was "We'll see."
When the same question was asked about a WiiWare re-release, the response was "We would consider it."
Finally, the team was asked about how they balanced the desire for a more modern feel while staying true to the original:
Q: [W]hile remaking the game, how did you balance the need to stay true to the original with giving the game a somewhat more modern feel?
A: The balance between was very important as we felt changing the game too significantly would potentially alienate fans new and old alike. We also built the game on top of the original so there were some elements that we couldn't really change whether we wanted to or not, like the registration of where the characters walk within the environment.
After that, the team ran out of Facebook comments for the day and couldn't answer any more questions. But when they do, we'll be sure and let you know.
